I listened to a very interesting story about the clash of politics and relgion today on NPR: link.
“All Things Considered, April 6, 2006 Black churches, often a bastion of groups calling for change and reform, have seen the recent rise of a few prominent conservative black pastors. In many cases, their work has energized, and divided, their congregation — and the split has spilled over into politics.”
What I find most interesting is the attempt to balance the prophetic role of the church with politics. In addition, the minister from Philly advocates helping people move away froma reliance on government programs, something my Catholic, Republican, Reagan-loving family taught me. I find it interesting that Republican Christians have found a way to serve the poor. Could this be a new mediating position for the religious right?
