One of the striking features of the four Christian Gospels is the complete absence of interpretation regarding Jesus. In fact, Jesus doesn’t say a whole lot about himself. John throws in little asides, but he was up there in years and we’ll go easy on him on that account.
Though the Gospels may not rank with the elite works of literature, they do at least one thing really well: they show. Showing instead of telling is the mark of a good story-teller, and they do this exceptionally well.
It’s especially important to show instead of tell when it comes to the Gospels because they want to show that Jesus is the Messiah. The stakes are high. These Gospels cannot afford to be preachy. They have to show Jesus for who he is.
