Immersion in the Story of Scripture
June 04, 07 by edStory is at the core of being human. Whether large or small, fact or fiction, we look to stories to ground us.
Stories tell us who we are, how we got here, and inform how we approach the world. Limits and goals are directed by the narrative we are rooted within.
As a Christian the story found in the Bible is where my roots are set. Alternative stories attempt to interfere, such as my fabricated sense of self-worth, the American dream, and any other vision fed by living in one of the most prosperous nations.
While these alternative stories place myself at the center with the goal of accumulating wealth, status, or simply a name for myself, the biblical story places God at the center as he reaches out to reestablish his bond with his wayward creation. One way to keep my life rooted in this story is reading the Bible.
Scripture reorients us in a world that focuses on self. The story of the Bible simultaneously tells us that we’re loved more than we could ever imagine even if we’re not the center of it all.
Scripture reveals a world being invaded by the divine, where miracles happen, and God is an active agent who refuses to be ignored. Instead of becoming enamored with ourselves, we are freed by scripture to be loved by God and to pass that love on to others.
We learn that the world is not as it should be, but change is coming and has in fact already come. This change unfortunately has not fully taken place. That is why we read the Bible: to keep us grounded in this advancing reality.
