Middle Ground in America

It’s over folks. Obama will be our next President.

Now what?

I think it would be good to begin with a search for some common ground in an election that drove some to the far ends of the political spectrum, both right and left. I’ve been saying that Christians could feasibly vote for McCain or Obama, so now it’s time to focus on some of the places where we agree.

My friend Todd Hiestand has a few thoughts on the election that provide a great place to start. I agree with Todd that we should be praying for the president, and if we can do that, we’re on a good track.

Another place I’d like to see us go is a move beyond assuming that people who disagree with our politics are stupid or are dooming America. Neither candidate is that bad or that good. I am deeply disturbed when I encounter someone who assumes people who vote for Obama are naive or anti-American, or those who vote for McCain are unintelligent hawks who want to blow up the world.

I’m picking on extremes here, but the thing is, I’ve heard both sides share those opinions. Now that the fighting is over and done with for at least the next four years, I would like to see some common ground established. Perhaps that needs to start with prayer, prayer for our leaders in both parties. The next step may be more difficult, so let’s start there for now.
