Thanks for the comments! I didn't get into the history of Protestants dividing, but that's part of the picture too. Thanks for bringing that up Lisa. Someone mentioned that via facebook today too. Nic, you're right that this is bigger than we would suppose, which is another great reason why it doesn't help all that much to make a "grand exit."

Hi Ed
The challenge is to minor on protest and major on attesting. That's why worship is a key.

For me emergence remains something bigger than EC; it is a fundamental description of how the universe operates. You can no more "leave" emergence than you can sing with John Meyer "Gravity, get the hell away from me". Not possible.

This has been on my mind too.

I suppose all movements are such. Martin Luther didn't want to break off and form something new. He wanted reform. When that couldn't happen, there was a break, and it was defined by what it was not.

You have a great point, and I think that drawing lines in the sand can make it about us, not about the Story of God / gospel, etc.

How much is being on top of the next big trend what defines us?

Various "cutting edge / hipster" (if you will) perspectives can override some basic theology sometimes, where it would be wise to abide in a level of mature balance that withstands trends.

Yet, the great thing about movements, as they burst onto the scene, is that-- if we don't dismiss them outright-- they can help us look carefully at ourselves, our faults, adjust, and grow. Oh, that we can never be so sure that we stop learning, or resist being humbled by detractors, as God uses them for that.

These movement are useful, even if short-lived.
Ed. Thanks!

I echo Trip and Adam - of course we don't want to be branded into a corner - for all kinds of good as well as silly reasons. If we can catch some of your grace and diversification, Ed, this whole thing would be a non-issue.

Thanks for the sanity!

Thanks Adam. Tripp, let's schedule it. I had a much funnier version of this post where I talked about how you and had these deep differences... such as I don't smoke cigars...
